Practice Breathing And Improve Your Health

By Dr. Amy Davis, MD

People frequently live in a chronic state of fight or flight. This creates a long term drain on your energy and health. The negative impacts on your body may include fatigue, weight gain, poor digestion, sleep problems, memory and concentration impairment, anxiety and depression, heart disease, osteoporosis etc. It’s very important for your health to learn how to calm down the stress response.

What you think and believe has a profound effect on your world. Our minds are running our lives, most of the time subconsciously. This works for us when we learn skills like driving that after a time we don’t have to actively think about. We can daydream while driving and yet still respond to traffic. This doesn’t work for us when we are programmed with beliefs that we aren’t aware of and we fall into patterns that create dysfunction and stress in our lives. For example, living in fear, anger or repeatedly finding yourself in the same old pattern that’s not working for you.

For the last twenty-five years the Heart Math Institute has been studying the impact of heart centered breathing on the nervous system by creating a coherent heart rate variability which calms and reduces stress quickly, and at the same time powerfully calms and reprograms the mind.

You can try this simple technique to bring the heart rate variability into a coherent pattern where it has the power to calm the fight or flight centers of the brain. Using the power of your heart to balance thoughts and emotions, you can achieve calming, energy, mental clarity and feel better fast.

Begin today by learning and practicing the Heart Math Quick Coherence Technique.

 • Focus your attention in the area of the heart. Imagine your breath is flowing in and out of your heart center or chest area, breathing a little slower and deeper than usual. Optimally inhale 5 seconds, exhale 5 seconds, or whatever rhythm is comfortable.

• Make a sincere attempt to experience a positive feeling. It may be for an experience, person, pet or baby animal, a special place or just focus on a feeling of calm or ease.

By practicing just 2-5 minutes twice per day you can reset your nervous system to a calmer more harmonious state. You will quickly begin to expand positive feelings and reduce your stress levels while you move into a more positive state of being. Practice this simple yet powerful method anywhere, anytime you need it.

Best of Health!
